In the far north of Albania, the Accursed Mountains (Bjeshkët e Nemuna) rise in sharp limestone walls above remote green valleys. The hike from Theth to Valbona crosses them in a single day and is one of the most rewarding walks in the Balkans.
The trail at a glance
- Distance: about 17 km, one way
- Time: 6 to 8 hours, including breaks
- Highest point: Valbona Pass, at around 1,800 m
- Difficulty: moderate to challenging, with a long, steady climb and a rocky descent
- Season: mid-June to late September; snow can block the pass outside these months
Before you start: Theth
Theth is a scattered mountain village at the end of a road from Shkodër. Give yourself at least a day here before the hike. Visit the small stone church framed by the peaks, the Lock-in Tower (Kulla e Ngujimit), where families once sheltered during blood feuds, and walk to the Grunas waterfall or the Blue Eye of Theth for a cold swim.
On the trail
From Theth the path climbs through beech forest and open meadows towards the pass. In summer there are a few simple cafés along the way serving coffee, cold drinks and snacks. The final section is a series of switchbacks to the saddle, where you look down into the Valbona valley on one side and back over Theth on the other.

The descent is steep and stony at first, then eases into a dry riverbed and a gentle walk to the guesthouses of Valbona.
Getting there and back
Most hikers make a loop from Shkodër:
- Shkodër to Theth: by road, about 2 to 3 hours.
- Theth to Valbona: on foot, across the pass.
- Valbona to Shkodër: by road to Fierzë, then the Lake Komani ferry, a spectacular journey through a narrow, fjord-like gorge.
Many guesthouses can arrange to move your main luggage around by car, so you only carry a day pack.
What to pack
- Hiking boots with good grip
- At least 2 litres of water and snacks
- Sun protection and a light rain jacket
- Cash, as card payment is rare in the mountains
Where to stay
Family guesthouses in Theth and Valbona offer simple rooms and generous half-board meals: homemade cheese, byrek, mountain honey and a glass of raki at the end of the day. Book ahead in July and August.
