Bunkers turned into museums, colourful façades, buzzing cafés and a cable car to the mountains: how to spend two perfect days in Tirana.

Tirana is where most journeys in Albania begin, and it deserves more than a quick stop on the way from the airport. In a few decades the capital has gone from grey and isolated to colourful and full of life, and its history is told openly in its squares, bunkers and museums.
Day 1: the heart of the city
Skanderbeg Square
Start in the vast, pedestrianised Skanderbeg Square, paved with stone from across Albania. Around it you’ll find the National History Museum, with its huge mosaic over the entrance, the National Opera and the elegant Et’hem Bey Mosque, whose painted interior is one of the most beautiful in the country. Next to it, the Clock Tower offers a view over the square.

Bunk’Art 2 and the House of Leaves
A short walk away, Bunk’Art 2 occupies a Cold War bunker built for the Ministry of Internal Affairs and tells the story of the communist-era police. The House of Leaves, once used by the secret police, is now a moving museum of surveillance. Together they explain a period that shaped modern Albania.
The Pyramid and Blloku
In the afternoon climb the Pyramid of Tirana, built as a museum in 1988 and now reborn as a youth and technology centre with steps you can walk up for city views. Then cross into Blloku, the neighbourhood once reserved for the communist elite and now Tirana’s liveliest area for cafés, bars and restaurants.
Day 2: markets, mountains and history
The New Bazaar (Pazari i Ri)
Start the morning at the New Bazaar, where stalls sell fruit, cheese, olives, honey and spices. It’s surrounded by restaurants serving traditional dishes, perfect for an early lunch.
Dajti Express
Take the Dajti Express cable car from the edge of the city up Mount Dajti. The ride takes about 15 minutes and ends with sweeping views over Tirana and, on clear days, all the way to the Adriatic.
Bunk’Art 1
On the way back, stop at Bunk’Art 1, a vast underground bunker built for the country’s leadership and now a museum and exhibition space.

- Fërgesë: peppers, tomatoes and cottage cheese cooked together, best with fresh bread.
- Byrek: flaky pastry filled with spinach, cheese or meat, the perfect street snack.
- Raki: the local fruit brandy, offered as a welcome almost everywhere.
Easy day trips
With an extra day, visit Krujë, about an hour away, for its castle, Skanderbeg Museum and old bazaar, or head to the coast at Durrës to see its Roman amphitheatre.
